Named ‘The Reilly Room’, the sensory rooms feature everything you would expect to be found in an autism specific educational setting. The project was founded by Gail Watts, B.Ed (Hons), MLI (Disabs/Autism), Special Needs (autism) teacher, author and ex-holiday park worker. Gail is the proud mother of Reilly, who had Asperger’s Syndrome, ADD and epilepsy and to whom the room is lovingly dedicated after sadly passing away in August 2018 from a suspected seizure. He was only 23 years old.
The Reilly Room Project is a non-for-profit organisation which honours the memory of Reilly Watts. Our volunteers help to install sensory rooms in holiday settings and support businesses to better welcome ASD families and give them a great holiday.
When the Watts family installed a sensory room in their holiday park in Renmark, the first of its kind in an accommodation setting in Australia, it seemed appropriate to call it 'Reilly's Room' in Reilly’s honour. In its vision to become more inclusive and accessible, BIG4 Renmark has since won the inaugural South Australian Tourism Award for Accessibility and followed it up with a back to back win.
The hope is that many more holiday parks will participate in this project to help to give many more ASD families a great holiday.
